The Kathmandu Valley, nestled in the heart of Nepal, is a place of striking beauty and profound cultural and religious significance. Surrounded by lush green hills and crowned with Himalayan vistas, the Valley is home to an extraordinary concentration of ancient temples, palaces, and monuments, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
It is a melting pot of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, where stupas and pagodas stand side by side, and festivals and rituals color daily life. Music, dance, and pageantry are integral to the many festivals. The city of Kathmandu is a bustling capital. One of the city’s famous landmarks is the Buddhist stupa, Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple). The complex is a World Heritage Site. Just outside of Kathmandu is the Hindu temple, Pashupatinath, located on the bank of the Bagmati River. The temple is also a World Heritage Site.
Other cities in the Valley are Patan and Bhaktapur, each with rich history, architecture, and art. The Valley is a living treasure chest of Nepalese culture.
