Greyhounds

The End of an Era, the Start of Another"

The greyhound racing industry is fading into history, with only four tracks left in the United States. By 2023, those remaining tracks are slated to close. My wife and I have adopted several retired racing greyhounds since 2009. Our greyhounds came from Florida, and we adopted them through the non-profit organization Pups Without Partners. Once tracks in Florida were all closed in 2021, PWP stopped receiving dogs from there and we were unable to adopt another one.

Luckily a tech at our veterinarian office in Stratford let us know she was going to purchase a puppy greyhound from a farm in Kansas and urged us to get on the list. The brood matron at the farm was expecting her first litter and in August she had 11 puppies. Three of the litter ended up here in Connecticut.

My project focuses on the racing industry in its final years and because of it, greyhound puppies are becoming available to the general population. I hope to document racing at a track in West Virginia, the puppies being raised for racing and for sale at the farm in Kansas and the adoption process for the few racing dogs that are retired.
